Market scene on Market Hill in Cambridge in 1956, with flower stalls trading from beneath striped canvas awnings in front of the surrounding commercial buildings. Wooden crates of flowers and plants line the pavement, while shoppers and passers-by move between the stalls and the roadway, capturing the everyday rhythm of the city centre market.
Rising behind the stalls is the Victoria Cinema, its signage clearly visible above the rooftops. The cinema occupied this prominent Market Hill site in its Art Deco form from 1931, replacing earlier entertainment uses on the same plot that dated back to the late 19th century. By the mid-1950s it was one of Cambridge’s main picture houses, operated by ABC and serving large audiences with continuous screenings.
The Victoria Cinema later closed in the 1980s and was largely demolished, although its distinctive façade was retained when the site was redeveloped, leaving this photograph as a record of Market Hill when open-air trading and large-scale cinema entertainment coexisted side by side.
