This 1977 photograph shows Victoria Bus Station in London, with its long canopy sign spanning the entrance ramps and a steady stream of traffic passing across the foreground. Closest to the camera is a red Triumph 2000, with a green Triumph 1300 just behind it, both helping to date the scene firmly to the later 1970s. Around the bus station entrance are plenty of smaller street details too, including the London Underground roundel at left, buses-only speed limit signs, and a flower stall sign declaring “Flowers say I love you.” Beyond the canopy, shopfronts such as Pizzaland add another layer of everyday commercial detail to this busy corner of Victoria. More than just a transport view, the image captures central London in 1977 as a place of buses, traffic, chain eateries and purposeful movement, before later rebuilding changed much of the area’s look.
