This 1975 photograph shows a Vanden Plas Princess paused on a rough moorland roadside beside a small stream, its deep red bodywork and upright grille giving it a far more formal appearance than most other members of the BMC 1100/1300 family. Although mechanically related to the Austin ADO16 range, the Vanden Plas version was trimmed and presented as a compact luxury saloon, with details such as the traditional grille, extra chrome and more refined interior setting it apart from the standard Austin-badged cars. Seen here in an unexpectedly rugged landscape, the car makes an interesting contrast between limousine-style styling and a very ordinary rural stopping place. More than a simple car portrait, the image captures the slightly unusual character of the Vanden Plas Princess itself: a small front-wheel-drive family car dressed up with the manners of something much grander.
