This 1975 photograph shows the interior and rear passenger compartment of a Vanden Plas Princess, one of the most upmarket members of the BMC 1100/1300 family based on the Austin ADO16. Finished in deep red with a well-trimmed cabin, the car is seen with both doors open, revealing the wood-veneer dashboard, black upholstery and, most notably, the fold-down picnic tables fitted for rear passengers. Those tables were one of the details that helped set the Vanden Plas version apart from the standard Austin-badged cars, giving this compact front-wheel-drive saloon an unexpectedly luxurious feel. More than a simple car interior study, the image captures the curious charm of the Vanden Plas Princess, a small British family car dressed up with traditional limousine-style touches.
