Mail being unloaded from the SS France at Southampton Docks in 1962, with a large netted sling of mailbags suspended above the deck and a line of dockside cranes stretching along the quay. The French Line’s SS France is berthed below, with men watching from the rail and the RMS Andes visible further along the quay in the background. SS France entered service in 1962 and worked the Le Havre–Southampton–New York route, becoming one of the last great transatlantic liners of the jet-age period. This vivid dockside scene captures the practical work behind ocean travel, with mailbags, cranes, dock workers, tugs, ship decks and passenger liners all contributing to a strong early-1960s view of Southampton as a major Atlantic port.
