This authentic 1970s color photograph, captured in 1976, documents the Burning House special effects demonstration on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood in California. The archival image features a classic two-story, grey colonial-style house with white columns and blue shutters, with flames visibly erupting from three second-story dormer windows and two ground-floor windows. Black soot and char marks are seen streaking up the side of the building, illustrating the realism of Hollywood fire effects. This set was a major highlight of the Studio Tour, where guests could watch from the tram as the “fire” was ignited and then quickly extinguished using a sophisticated gas-line and sprinkler system. The house sits on a dusty backlot area with a small, manicured patch of green lawn in front, bordered by the rugged Hollywood hills.
