The United States Pavilion, sometimes referred to as the Federal Pavilion, was one of the fair’s most imposing structures. Clad in panels of shimmering multi-colored glass and stretching roughly 330 feet in length, it was designed to reflect the fair’s optimistic theme of national progress. Inside, visitors encountered a mix of exhibits, theaters, historic artifacts, and a large research library. One of the highlights was a multi-screen ride-film experience that carried audiences on a fast-paced visual journey through America’s past, present, and imagined future—from covered wagons to space exploration.
At the close of the fair, the federal government had not budgeted any money for its demolition, so it was “gifted” to the City of New York. Without a clear plan for reuse, the massive building remained empty and slowly fell into disrepair before being demolished around 1977.
Today, nothing remains of the pavilion—its former footprint now lies beneath the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, a reminder of how the fairgrounds continued to evolve long after the World’s Fair ended.
