This 1972 photograph shows the forecourt outside United Standard House at Aldgate, with the bold yellow signs of Carpet Supermarket dominating the scene above the pedestrian subway entrance. The subway sign points towards Mansell Street, Whitechapel High Street and Aldgate High Street, while other visible businesses include Alfred Marks Bureau and Frankenberg’s. In the foreground a street performer or demonstrator in a patterned waistcoat, white flared trousers and a close-fitting cap draws a small crowd, adding a wonderfully offbeat slice of early-1970s London street life. More than just a view of Aldgate’s commercial frontage, the image captures the area’s mix of post-war office blocks, bargain retail and everyday pavement theatre at a time when this part of East London still had a distinctly rough-edged city character.
