The Tudor Café dominates this busy stretch of Eastgate Street, its black-and-white timbered frontage and projecting upper storey drawing the eye above the pavement crowds. At street level, Dutton’s Sigarro Stores occupies the ground floor, with the café advertising luncheons, hot and cold meals above, and signage indicating function rooms on the upper floor. Neighbouring businesses are clearly signed: Barratt Shoes at No. 23, Fuller’s at No. 27, and The Maypole Dairy Co. Ltd at No. 29, illustrating the dense mix of retail and refreshment that characterised Chester’s city centre in the early 1950s. Cars edge through the scene while pedestrians cluster beneath awnings, capturing Eastgate Street at a peak moment of post-war commercial life. Today, the Tudor Café is long gone, but the buildings remain, with the street continuing as one of Chester’s principal shopping routes.
