This 1963 photograph shows the Trans-Antarctic Expedition Tucker Sno-Cat “C” unit on display at the Montagu Motor Museum, Beaulieu. Painted in its distinctive orange finish and carrying the words “TRANS-ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION” on the side, the tracked machine was one of four Tucker Sno-Cats used during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1955 to 1958, which completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole. Seen here on the museum lawns beside one of Beaulieu’s display buildings, it represents a very different kind of motor transport history from the cars usually associated with the collection, linking the Hampshire museum with one of the great post-war polar expeditions. The photograph captures a moment when this remarkable survival from Antarctic exploration was already being treated as an important exhibit in its own right.
