Trongate, Glasgow, in 1987, looking east towards Glasgow Cross with the Tolbooth Steeple rising above the traffic at the far end of the street. The scene is packed with late-1980s city-centre detail, from orange Strathclyde Buses double-deckers and dense pavements of shoppers to the prominent C&A sign on the right and shopfronts including Currys on the left. Period vehicles visible in the traffic include a Ford Escort, a Vauxhall Cavalier and a Mini Metro, while the cyclist in the foreground adds to the bustle of one of Glasgow’s oldest thoroughfares. Trongate was one of the city’s earliest streets, named for the public weighbeam or “tron”, and Glasgow Cross remained the medieval heart of the burgh; the Tolbooth Steeple seen here is the surviving part of the 17th-century tolbooth after the rest of the building was demolished in 1921.
