The Treehouse Restaurant was one of the most visually striking attractions in the Africa Pavilion and was often described by visitors as one of the fair’s most memorable themed dining spaces. Designed to resemble a giant baobab tree—an iconic symbol of sub-Saharan Africa—it consisted of a large elevated dining deck supported by a stylised tree trunk and branches. Though artificial, the structure was detailed enough that many visitors assumed at first glance it was constructed from natural materials.
The pavilion itself represented a coalition of newly independent African nations, including Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and others. Their exhibits aimed to present Africa not as a stereotyped curiosity (a problem common in earlier expositions) but as a continent of modern states emerging from colonial rule. The Treehouse Restaurant, however, leaned more toward themed entertainment, reflecting the fair’s broader pattern of mixing cultural education with spectacle.
Menus from the restaurant reveal a blend of cuisines: some dishes drew inspiration from North and West African cooking—such as peanut-based sauces, skewered meats, and couscous—while others were distinctly American or Continental, ensuring broad appeal. Contemporary reviews described the food as “exotic enough to feel adventurous, but familiar enough to order.”
