This 1987 photograph captures Trafalgar Square as a hard-working traffic junction as much as a civic space, with pedestrians crowding the crossings and red London buses sweeping around the island in front of the square. At the centre is a Daimler Fleetline double-decker, its registration THX 584S visible on the front, while another bus blurs past on the left and more can be seen beyond the balustrade. The equestrian statue rises above the roadway behind, and the background includes the grand classical frontage of Canada House, with the Canadian flag flying above, along with surrounding late-Victorian and inter-war buildings and a rooftop wrapped in scaffolding. Cars, black cabs, traffic lights and the packed pavements all help make this a strong record of Trafalgar Square before the later reworking of the area, when the north side was still dominated by moving traffic rather than the more pedestrian-friendly layout seen today.
