This 1987 view of Trafalgar Square captures the centre of London in a period of constant movement and maintenance, with Nelson’s Column heavily wrapped in scaffolding while traffic streams around the square below. Beyond the works rises the steeple and clock of St Martin-in-the-Fields, while to the right stands South Africa House, still bearing the old South African flag during the late apartheid era. The road scene is equally rich in period detail, with black cabs, a red London bus carrying a large Vernons advert, a maroon saloon and other everyday traffic circling the square before later changes reduced vehicle dominance here. It is a particularly strong record of Trafalgar Square as it once was: not the more pedestrian-friendly civic space of today, but a noisy working junction where monuments, road traffic and constant repair all shared the same view.
