This 1984 view looks across Trafalgar Square from the National Gallery terrace, with the base of Nelson’s Column and its bronze lions dominating the centre of the scene. The square is busy with people gathered around the fountains and across the paving, while beyond, the view runs straight down Whitehall to the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster, then still commonly known as Big Ben, which is here partly wrapped in scaffolding. Period details include several red London buses moving through the background, including one on the far right carrying a side advert, and the broad paved terrace in the foreground before later changes to traffic and pedestrian layout around the square. It is a strong record of central London in the mid-1980s, capturing Trafalgar Square before the north side was pedestrianised and while it still functioned much more as a traffic-filled civic space than it does today.
