This 1978 photograph captures Trafalgar Square at its most informal, with people perched all over the base of Nelson’s Column and children climbing onto one of Sir Edwin Landseer’s great bronze lions. The scene feels far looser and more relaxed than Trafalgar Square does today, with visitors treating the monument plinths as somewhere to sit, play and watch the crowds. At right, one of the bronze relief panels on the column base is clearly visible, while in the background the sign for Superama Shopping peeps out above the trees and surrounding buildings. The clothes, hairstyles and easy sprawl of the crowd give the image a very late-1970s atmosphere, turning this into more than just a landmark view. It is a lively record of Trafalgar Square as a busy public gathering place, full of people rather than traffic.
