This 1978 photograph looks across Trafalgar Square with the great bronze lions at the base of Nelson’s Column visible at right and crowds gathered around the monument steps. On the left-hand side of the view are a run of familiar commercial buildings of the period, including the Bristol & West Building Society, Canadian Pacific House, a NatWest Bank branch, and Norway House, its name prominently displayed on the rooftop. The mix of ornate late-Victorian and Edwardian façades with harder modern office blocks shows central London in one of its transitional phases, before later redevelopment altered much of the surrounding skyline. More than just a landmark view, the image captures Trafalgar Square in 1978 as a busy traffic junction and public meeting place, still full of buses, advertising and everyday street life.
