This 1977 photograph shows Trafalgar Square busy with visitors around one of the great fountains, with Nelson’s Column rising behind and the four bronze lions stretched out around its base. The square is full of everyday detail, from people sitting on the fountain rim and chatting in flared trousers and wide-lapelled jackets to the crowds gathered around the monuments and paving beyond. Across the far side of the square the huge Bovis rooftop sign dominates the skyline, while the curved corner building at left carries the Ashby & Horner name and a red London bus can be seen passing behind the crowds. More than just a landmark view, the image captures Trafalgar Square in 1977 as a lively public space, still full of traffic, pigeons, advertising and casual afternoon life in central London.
