This 1973 photograph captures a familiar old Trafalgar Square ritual, with a man selling food for the pigeons while children and parents gather around the birds on the paving below Nelson’s Column. The boy in the foreground is surrounded by flapping pigeons, while a younger child behind him seems almost engulfed by them, watched by adults in flared trousers, jackets and other unmistakably 1970s clothes. Before pigeon feeding was banned and the birds driven away, scenes like this were part of the square’s everyday character, with seed sellers, tourists and London families all sharing the space beneath the great bronze lions and monuments. More than just a family snapshot, it preserves a now-vanished side of Trafalgar Square that was once as famous as the fountains and statues themselves.
