This 1970 photograph captures Trafalgar Square busy with traffic and tourists, with the National Gallery filling the background behind one of the fountains and the statue of General Charles James Napier. A red Routemaster sightseeing bus passes across the foreground carrying a “Round London Sightseeing Tour” advert, while black cabs and a pale green Morris 1100 help date the everyday street scene. To the right, St Martin-in-the-Fields is partly wrapped in scaffolding, adding another useful piece of period detail to the view. More than just a landmark shot, the image preserves Trafalgar Square at a time when central London still felt heavily trafficked, with buses and taxis moving directly across one of the capital’s most famous public spaces.
