This 1982 photograph shows an official H.M. Tower of London information board, giving a wonderfully specific snapshot of admission prices, opening times and visitor rules in the early 1980s. The sign lists general admission at £2.50 for adults and £1.20 for old age pensioners and children aged 5–15, while entry to the Jewel House is priced separately at 60p for adults and 30p for old age pensioners and children. It also records the opening hours as 9.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 2.00pm to 5.00pm on Sundays, with additional notices covering the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, authorised guides, and rules on dogs, bicycles, photography and radios or cassette players. Presented in English, German and French, the board is a strong little piece of visitor-history ephemera, preserving not just the cost of a trip to the Tower in 1982 but the practical terms on which one of London’s great historic attractions was experienced.
