Sponsored by a consortium of electric power companies, the Tower of Light was one of the fair’s most dramatic architectural statements. Its exterior walls were made up of 600 faceted aluminum prisms designed to catch and reflect light during the day, while at night a brilliant searchlight — billed as the most powerful ever created — shot skyward from its center, visible for miles around.
Inside, visitors found exhibits and a theater presentation promoting the future of electrical power: cleaner homes, more efficient appliances, safer cities, and lighting technology that promised convenience and comfort at the push of a button.
Like most corporate pavilions, the Tower of Light was dismantled after the fair. Today, the site is part of a soccer field within Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, with no trace of the dazzling beacon that once stood here.
