A striking contrast of old and new at Tower Hill in 1974. In the foreground stands the small premises of J.J. Redding Ltd., its bright red door and Georgian-style windows looking almost like a leftover from a vanished street. Behind it rises a fragment of medieval stonework — one of the surviving stretches of the Roman and later City wall that once encircled London. The jumble of surrounding buildings ranges from soot-blackened Victorian workshops to the stark post-war office blocks that came to dominate this part of the City during the 1960s redevelopment boom. Captured at a moment when Tower Hill still had pockets of dereliction and industrial use, the scene preserves the layered history of the area just before large-scale regeneration swept much of it away.
