The Tolbooth Tavern, Canongate, Edinburgh, in the 1970s, with the dark stone mass of the old Canongate Tolbooth rising above the street and its distinctive projecting clock hanging out over the Royal Mile. The tavern sign can be seen at ground level beneath the turreted corner and steep slate spire, while parked cars and pedestrians bring everyday late-20th-century life into a building whose origins go back much further. Built in 1591 as the tolbooth of the then separate burgh of Canongate, the structure served as a courthouse, prison and council building before the ground floor became the Tolbooth Tavern in 1820, making this a particularly rich Edinburgh street scene where centuries of civic history still sat directly in the path of modern traffic and shoppers.
