A 1970s color photo of the terminal and control tower at Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport in 1975. The multi-story building features a distinct mid-century architectural style with a “WELCOME TO PANAMA DUTY FREE SHOPS” sign along the rooftop of the lower level. The white control tower with its blue-tinted windows rises above the terminal, which is surrounded by lush green lawns and palm trees. On the tarmac in the foreground, various ground support equipment is visible, including a red metal ladder and a white Braniff International Airways service truck, capturing the bright and tropical atmosphere of this major Central American hub during the 1970s.
Today, the original 1970s terminal seen in this photo has been superseded by a massive, modern airport complex designed to handle millions of international transit passengers. While parts of the older infrastructure still exist for cargo or secondary use, the primary passenger experience now takes place in the expansive Terminal 1 and the futuristic Terminal 2, designed by Foster + Partners. Braniff International Airways, whose service truck appears in the image, famously ceased operations in 1982, making this photo a unique record of the airline’s historic presence in Panama.
