Before the park became dominated by major roller coasters, its broad expanse of water supported a range of gentler outdoor activities like this, making the lake an important part of the attraction in its own right. The informal shoreline beyond, with small boats, equipment and open ground, adds to the distinctly recreational feel of the scene and shows a very different side of Thorpe Park from the thrill-ride image it would later develop. It is a strong record of the park’s earlier years, when watersports and open-air leisure still played a central role in a day out there.
