St Basil’s Cathedral in the USSR, seen as part of Thorpe Park’s Model World in the early 1980s. Model World was one of the park’s earlier attractions, made up of miniature buildings and landmark scenes set within carefully maintained gardens, and this colourful recreation of Moscow’s famous cathedral was among its most eye-catching exhibits. The striped and onion-shaped domes, formal flowerbeds and clipped lawns gave the display a distinctly ornamental feel, very different from the thrill-ride identity Thorpe Park would acquire later. It is a strong record of one of the park’s original family attractions, capturing a time when miniature architecture and landscaped displays still formed a significant part of the visitor experience.
