Jousting at Thorpe Park in the early 1980s, with two armoured riders entering the arena in brightly coloured heraldic costume before a packed crowd of spectators. The black-and-yellow and red-and-gold outfits, complete with shields, crests and caparisons, gave this live show a strong medieval pageant feel, reflecting the sort of family entertainment that formed an important part of Thorpe Park in its earlier years. Around the ring can be seen attendants carrying banners, temporary grandstands full of visitors, and the practical showground infrastructure behind, all of which root the scene firmly in the park’s pre-thrill-ride era. It is a vivid record of one of Thorpe Park’s more theatrical attractions, capturing the atmosphere of a summer stunt display in front of a large audience.
