This authentic 1970s color photograph, captured in 1974, documents the famous Theater of the Sea marine mammal park located in Islamorada, Florida. The archival image features the park’s iconic multi-tiered red and white roadside sign, which includes a marquee proudly announcing that their show was “Televised Coast to Coast by the NBC ‘Today’ Show.” Smaller signage invites visitors to the “Beautiful Gift Hawaiian and Casual Dress Shop.” The foreground shows the white-gravel-lined edge of the Overseas Highway, while the parking lot contains period-correct vehicles, including a light green compact car and several American station wagons. Tropical palm trees and dense hammock vegetation frame the low-slung park buildings in the background. Established in 1946, Theater of the Sea is one of the oldest marine mammal facilities in the world and was built within the remains of a quarry used for the Florida East Coast Railway. Today, the facility is still standing and continues to operate as a popular tourist destination, maintaining much of the “Old Florida” atmosphere depicted in this scene.
