A classic view of the Unisphere looking across the long reflecting pools that formed part of the fair’s central landscaping. Built by U.S. Steel and standing 140 feet tall, the stainless-steel globe served as the symbol of the fair and of its theme: “Peace Through Understanding.” Three large orbit rings encircle the structure, representing early space-age achievements and humanity’s aspirations beyond Earth.
Surrounded by flags from around the world and framed by fountains that once shot water more than 100 feet into the air, the Unisphere became the backdrop for countless photos—just as it is here. For many visitors, this walk was their first glimpse of the fair’s heart: a modern, optimistic vision of global unity during the height of the Cold War and the early Space Age.
Today, the Unisphere survives as one of New York’s most recognizable landmarks and remains the defining centerpiece of Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, long after the rest of the fair has faded into history.
