A 1960s colour photo of The Tiger Tavern on the corner of Lower Thames Street and Tower Hill during the early 1960s. The Victorian-era building, which replaced a 16th-century tavern on this site in 1893. Several period vehicles are parked along the cobbled street in the foreground, including a blue Fiat 600, a Fordson van and a Humber Hawk. To the left of the pub stands a small, round stone structure used as a subway entrance, while the adjacent lots show the early stages of post-war redevelopment.
Today, the landscape of Tower Hill has been completely transformed. The Tiger Tavern seen here closed in January 1963 and was demolished shortly after to make way for new office developments. While a successor pub of the same name was built into the 1965 office block, it too was demolished in 2002. The site is now occupied by a modern commercial building, though the round subway entrance seen in the photo still survives today.
