This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the historic exterior of The Tiger Tavern, located at the corner of Lower Thames Street and Tower Hill. While the site had housed a tavern since the 1500s, this specific building dated from 1893 and famously survived the Blitz during the Second World War. The image showcases the pub’s prominent “Charrington’s Ales & Stout” signage and inscriptions claiming it was “Honoured by Queen Elizabeth the First.” Under the management of its final landlord, Reginald Bath, the tavern closed in January 1963 and was demolished to make way for city redevelopment. A modern office building replaced it in 1965, though that too has since been replaced by newer office developments. This archival print is a wonderful record of London’s lost public houses and serves as an excellent resource for local history research, editorial use, or to print for yourself as a piece of vintage wall art.
