This 1980 photograph shows The Sun in Splendour on Portobello Road, W11, its frontage decorated with greenery, red-painted doors and small Christmas trees lit in the upper windows. The pub’s name appears both on the black fascia and on the hanging sign above, which also carries the slogan Sun in Splendour beneath the smiling sun emblem and Charrington branding. Above the first-floor balcony is a clearly visible Portobello Road, W11 street sign, along with a circular Pub of the Year plaque, while next door the blue frontage of Peg’s Stores adds another useful local detail. People walk past the pub in period clothes, with a motorcycle parked outside and a red hatchback at the right edge of the scene, giving the image the everyday feel of Portobello Road just before the area’s later polish and rising fame transformed much of its street life.
