A festive Strand in 1977, decked out for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Union Flags line the street from the Royal Courts of Justice (left) all the way toward Aldwych, but the standout display comes from the Wig and Pen Club on the right — the famously eccentric journalists’ and barristers’ haunt, which has gone all-in with blue-and-silver bunting, giant crests and cascading flags. The Wig and Pen occupied a pair of 17th- and 18th-century buildings opposite the Royal Courts, and for decades it served as a meeting place for Fleet Street reporters, lawyers and politicos. Its flamboyant Jubilee decorations were widely remarked upon at the time and perfectly capture the slightly theatrical character the club was known for. A mix of coaches, black taxis and 1970s saloons move along a Strand that still retained much of its older architecture, making this a classic snapshot of London in its Jubilee summer.
