A busy 1974 afternoon on the Strand. On the right, the wooden posts, temporary handrail and hoardings outside Charing Cross Station mark one of the decade’s major transport projects: the construction of a new shared ticket hall for the Underground. At the time, the Northern Line’s Strand station and the Bakerloo Line’s Trafalgar Square station were being merged into a single complex to serve the forthcoming Jubilee Line. The new unified station was scheduled to open in 1976, but — in true 1970s fashion — delays pushed the reopening back to 1979, leaving the Strand lined with building works for several years. To the left, traffic heads east toward Aldwych past the familiar West End mix of shops, banks and restaurants. Crowds queue outside the Brook Street Bureau employment agency, while commuters and shoppers cross the Strand in the late-afternoon light.
