This 1971 photograph looks east along the Strand from its beginning at Duncannon Street, with Charing Cross station just out of shot to the right. The scene captures a part of central London that has changed greatly since, mixing older West End frontages on the left with plainer post-war commercial architecture on the right, including Brook Street Bureau, Dolcis and other now-vanished shop signs. Black cabs, saloons and pedestrians spread across the broad junction, while the long perspective down the Strand shows the street still functioning as one of London’s busiest and most important traffic corridors. More than just a street view, it preserves the Strand at a transitional moment, before later redevelopment, traffic management changes and modern retail turnover altered the character of this end of the West End.
