This authentic 1970s colour photograph captures the exterior of The Royal Oak public house, formerly located on Forest Road in Loughton, Essex. The archival image documents the pub’s distinctive mid-century mock-Tudor design, featuring a red brick ground floor topped with a black-and-white half-timbered gable. Unique decorative elements include three large white-painted wooden cartwheels mounted to the facade. The building displays prominent “Whitbread” and “Royal Oak” signage in a traditional red-and-white colour scheme. The forecourt is paved with grey cobbles and serves as a parking area for several period vehicles, including a blue Hillman Hunter and a light grey Austin 1800. To the left, a tall white signpost lists “Grills” and indicates a car park and garden at the rear. While the establishment has since closed, this factual record preserves a classic example of 1970s suburban Essex pub architecture and social styling.
