This 1972 photograph shows The Reject China Shop at numbers 33 and 34 Beauchamp Place in London, its plain white frontage and bold black lettering standing out among the taller terrace buildings of Knightsbridge. The display windows are packed with china and tableware, while the signs above and beside the entrance make clear that the business occupied both addresses. To the right, the sign for F. M. Vincent Ltd, Furriers can also be seen above the neighbouring frontage, adding another useful layer of period shopping detail from this part of west London. Parked outside is a white Austin 1100, an everyday British saloon that helps fix the scene firmly in the early 1970s. More than just a shopfront, the image captures Beauchamp Place before its later transformation into the more overtly luxury fashion street it became in later decades.
