This 1986 photograph shows the vessel Regalia moored on the Thames beside the striking white mass of Mondial House, with the twin riverside towers of Cannon Street station visible on the left. The boat’s red and gold nameboard reading Regalia London, the gangway down to the foreshore, and the contrast between the decorative floating venue and the severe late-1970s office architecture behind it make this a particularly vivid riverside scene. Mondial House dominates the background with its layered, angular form, while the older station towers provide a surviving nineteenth-century counterpoint at the edge of the image. It is a strong record of this stretch of the north bank before later redevelopment, when Mondial House still stood on Upper Thames Street and the waterfront retained a far harsher, more infrastructural look than it does today.
