The Red Lion on Walmgate in York in 1956, showing the timber-framed inn with its red tiled roof, hanging Red Lion sign and window boxes facing the street. The view captures the building from Walmgate, with its black-and-white frontage, brick chimneys and adjoining older buildings, while a later commercial frontage for F. T. Burley is visible further along the street. The Red Lion is one of York’s historic public houses, with parts of the building dating back to the medieval and early modern period, and it was listed in 1954. This colour photograph shows the inn in its mid-1950s street setting, combining old York architecture with post-war commercial details, railings, road surface and the changing surroundings of Walmgate.
