A 1971 view of the Prospect of Whitby, the famous riverside pub on Wapping Wall, widely claimed to be London’s oldest waterside tavern. A drinking house has stood on this spot since the early 16th century, when it was known as The Pelican, serving sailors, dockworkers, merchants and — according to legend — the occasional pirate. Its later name came from a collier ship, The Prospect, which regularly moored nearby. The pub’s low timber frontage, leaded windows and flagstone floors survived centuries of dockside life, and by the 20th century it had become a favourite stop for artists, writers and curious visitors seeking “old London” along the Thames. Just beyond the courtyard stands the pub’s notorious gallows replica, recalling the Execution Dock nearby where condemned pirates were once hanged.
