This authentic 1980s colour photograph, captured in 1982, features the SR.N4 Mountbatten-class hovercraft, “The Princess Margaret,” at the Dover hoverport in Kent. The archival image documents the massive vessel in its distinctive Hoverspeed livery, following the 1981 merger of Seaspeed and Hoverlloyd. The craft displays a bold red, white, and blue colour scheme with prominent “HOVERSPEED” branding along the upper deck. The technical details of the hovercraft are clearly visible, including the large four-bladed propellers mounted on pylon swivels and the heavy-duty black rubber finger skirts resting on the concrete pad. To the right, passengers are seen ascending a blue mobile staircase to enter the cabin area, which indicates the cross-channel route “Dover-Ramsgate-Calais-Boulogne.” The overcast sky provides even lighting that highlights the scale of this engineering feat, which was the largest civil hovercraft of its time. This factual record preserves the height of commercial hovercraft travel across the English Channel as it appeared in 1982.
