A 1974 view of the Old Bull and Bush, one of Hampstead’s best-known pubs, tucked just off North End Way on the edge of Hampstead Heath. A tavern has stood here since at least the early 18th century, originally serving as a rural alehouse for walkers heading across the heath. Its fame grew in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods when the arrival of the Hampstead Heath railway line brought huge weekend crowds — immortalised in the music-hall song “Down at the Old Bull and Bush.” By the time this photograph was taken, the pub had settled into life as a comfortable suburban local, still retaining its quirky charm. In the decades since it has been refurbished several times, but the Old Bull and Bush remains one of Hampstead’s most recognisable and well-loved landmarks.
