This 1982 photograph shows St Martin’s Theatre in London with its frontage dominated by bright red signage for The Mousetrap, Agatha Christie’s long-running murder mystery. The displays make a point of the production’s 30th year, with the side sign reading “By Agatha Christie 30th year” and the canopy proclaiming “The world’s longest-ever run”, while the box office board advertises an evening performance at 8.0. First staged in 1952, The Mousetrap had transferred to St Martin’s Theatre in 1974 after opening at the Ambassadors, so by the time of this photograph it was already firmly established as one of the West End’s most recognisable theatrical institutions. The image is a strong period record of the theatre before later anniversary branding and street changes, capturing the show at a point when its record-breaking run was already a major part of its identity.
