This photograph shows the Mayflower II, a full-scale replica of the original 1620 Mayflower, docked in Plymouth Harbor in the early 1970s. Built in England between 1955 and 1956 using traditional 17th-century shipbuilding techniques, the vessel sailed across the Atlantic in 1957—just as its predecessor had more than three centuries earlier—arriving in the United States as a gift from the United Kingdom in recognition of enduring friendship and shared heritage.
By the time this image was taken in 1971, the ship had already become a major part of the Plimoth Plantation (now Plimoth Patuxet Museums) experience, serving thousands of visitors each year. The walkway and visitor booth visible near the pier reflect its role as a living museum, where interpreters in period costume described the cramped, hazardous voyage undertaken by the Pilgrims.
The Mayflower II is moored quietly here, its masts and ratlines rising sharply against a pale sky while small boats sit anchored in the harbor behind it. The curved red fence and neatly maintained lawn add a sense of calm and order to the scene, contrasting with the harsh, uncertain reality faced by those who once crossed the Atlantic aboard the original Mayflower.
Today, Mayflower II remains an iconic artifact of early American history—restored, preserved, and still docked in Plymouth—continuing to tell the story of one of the most significant journeys in colonial America.
