A 1984 view looking down over Richmond’s Market Place, with the tall stone obelisk at the centre of the square and the town’s tightly packed roofs and shops spreading out around it. Parked cars fill much of the cobbled marketplace, while traders’ vehicles and fairground equipment in the foreground add to the sense of a market town still being used for everyday commerce and events rather than simply admired for its historic setting. Visible shopfronts include Richmond Dairies, Fawcetts and other long-established businesses around the square, while beyond the town the landscape rises into green fields and post-war housing on the hillside, showing the contrast between Richmond’s older core and its newer outskirts.
