This 1971 photograph looks west along The Mall in London on a busy day, with crowds lining the broad ceremonial avenue and traffic streaming between the tree-lined pavements. Seen from near the Victoria Memorial, the view takes in the great processional route leading towards Buckingham Palace, framed by the white stone pedestals and statuary at the foreground edge. The road is full of period London vehicles, including black cabs, saloons, vans and delivery vehicles, while the dense crowds suggest a royal occasion, public gathering or simply one of the many days when central ceremonial London drew large numbers of visitors. More than just a street scene, the image captures The Mall as both a working road and one of the capital’s most recognisable ceremonial spaces, still full of everyday traffic in a way that now feels very much of its time.
