This 1987 photograph shows the frontage of The London Dungeon on Tooley Street, with its large dripping-letter sign above a dramatic painted and sculpted tableau depicting the execution of Anne Boleyn on 19 May 1536. The small plaque above the central scene identifies it as “The Execution of Anne Boleyn, 19 May 1536. Painted for the London Dungeon by Douglas Druce – 1984”, an unusually specific detail that fixes both the subject and the date of the artwork itself. The painted panels show Anne Boleyn kneeling before the executioner, with guards and spectators framed beneath three arches, reflecting the attraction’s original emphasis on gruesome historical tableaux rather than the later actor-led format it became known for. Opened on Tooley Street in 1974 under the arches near London Bridge, The London Dungeon began as a walkthrough display of London’s darker history, making this a particularly good record of the attraction in its earlier, more exhibit-based years.
