A 1972 view of the Lamb & Flag, tucked away on Rose Street in Covent Garden and widely regarded as one of London’s oldest surviving pubs. A tavern has stood on this spot since at least 1623, and the building earned a rowdy reputation in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when the narrow alleyways of Covent Garden were notorious for street brawls and bare-knuckle prizefights — giving the pub its long-used nickname, “The Bucket of Blood.” By the 20th century the Lamb & Flag had mellowed into a much-loved historic pub, retaining its small rooms, wood panelling and traditional frontage seen here. Today it remains one of Covent Garden’s most atmospheric drinking spots, its centuries-old fabric surviving despite the wholesale redevelopment that transformed the surrounding area.
