A 1960s colour photo of the luxury motor yacht ‘Kalizma’ moored alongside Gun Wharves on the River Thames in 1969. The elegant white vessel, famously purchased by Richard Burton for Elizabeth Taylor in 1967, is positioned against a backdrop of imposing multi-storey brick warehouses and industrial cranes. A sign for ‘A & B KNIGHT (FISH POULTRY) LTD’ is visible on the wharf structure, while the weathered facades of the Gun Wharves warehouses reflect the heavy commercial character of Wapping and the Pool of London during the latter half of the 20th century.
Today, the waterfront at Gun Wharves has been completely transformed as part of the extensive redevelopment of London’s Docklands. The industrial warehouses seen in 1969 have largely been converted into high-end residential apartments or replaced by modern office complexes. While the ‘Kalizma’ still survives as a private luxury yacht, the busy commercial river traffic and working wharves have been replaced by leisure craft and the Thames Path. The area is now a quiet residential enclave, vastly different from the gritty, functional maritime environment captured in the early 1960s.
